What is Prolotherapy?

Prolotherapy is a method of strengthening weakened, stretched and partially torn ligaments and tendons by enhancing the support systems of bones and muscles.

From injuries, or normal wear and tear, connective tissues are damaged, resulting in altered structure and function. Pain often intervenes, and efforts to compensate for imbalances leads to further injury and impairment. Unaddressed injuries to ligaments can lead to arthritis and chronic irreversible problems.

Surgery on bones and joints may be recommended and pursued, often without resolving the problem because the real problem has not been addressed.

Prolotherapy is an effective, non-surgical, approach that can strengthen your back, neck, arms and legs, eliminating pain and restoring function.

How Does Prolotherapy Work? Concentrated dextrose, or sugar water, is combined with a pain-killer such as procaine, vitamin B12, and saline, and injected into the involved ligament or tendon where the tissue meets the bone.

There is an initial natural inflammatory response, initiated by the irritative effect of the dextrose. White cells enter the injected area, proliferate and then differentiate into connective tissue-forming cells.

The whole process takes about three weeks. Ligaments and tendons thicken and tighten, re-establishing a proper alignment of the bones and alleviating pain.

The same areas can be re-injected every 3-4 weeks if necessary. If the problem is chronic, three or more injections are usually necessary to achieve a full effect.

Dr. Lobe utilizes state of the art ultrasound to precisely diagnose and guide injections.

Trigger Point Injection
Trigger Point Injection (TPI) is another option for pain treatment. TPI is used to treat painful areas of muscle that contain trigger points, or knots of muscle, that form when muscles do not relax.

Many times, such knots can be felt under the skin. Trigger points may irritate the nerves around them and cause referred pain, or pain that is felt in another part of the body.

What Happens During the Procedure? In the TPI procedure, Dr. Lobe inserts a small needle into the patient’s trigger point. The injection contains a combination of procaine, vitamin B12, and homeopathics.

With the injection the trigger point is made inactive and the pain is alleviated. Usually, a brief course of treatment will result in sustained relief. Several sites may be injected in one visit.

TPI is similar to an acupuncture treatment, except the liquid painlessly stays in the acupuncture spot absorbing for several hours afterwards, providing a prolonged treatment.

If a patient has an allergy to a certain medication, acupuncture or dry needling (involving no fluids) can be used.
